The Midwest truly experienced a Cultural Explosion the weekend of April 27 as EXOTICA took control of the Leland House hotel in downtown Detroit and turned it in to a unique world of fetishistic indulgence.
The sexiness began on Friday, and continued almost non-stop through Sunday afternoon, with vending, performances and workshops by day, and more performances and the hottest parties I've seen in a long time by night. Flying in from Los Angeles to host EXOTICA was acclaimed fetish model and promoter Vena, bringing her usual charm, beauty, and grace to the event, making EXOTICA a truly elegant occasion. Clad in a never ending flow of outfits from Lust Latex Designs and Azrael's Accomplice Designs, her exquisite sense of fashion raised the high water mark yet again, bringing chic sophistication to EXOTICA. Presenting this multi-day erotic event was Detroit's powerhouse alternative talent rep Chaos Productions, led by Ally Stapleton, who pulled everything together beautifully. Her skillful planning, and almost intuitive sense of what EXOTICA's guests wanted led to one of the best organized and most entertaining events I have ever had the pleasure of attending, fetish or otherwise.
EXOTICA was well-represented by the media. Among the many photographers present were celebrated fetish photographer Larry Bradby. Local photography talent was there in full force with Lew Denison (EXOTICA's official photographer), DVS, Eric Cain, and many others. Representatives from Gothic Lace, Real Detroit, Super Bitch, The Dominant, and Kink Magazines were all in full force. EXOTICA offered dozens of workshops and performances, both during the daytime expo and the nighttime parties. Unfortunately I missed many of them -- as the hostess's personal slave, I was kept far too busy -- but the feedback I received from EXOTICA guests about the workshops and performances was all extremely positive. The few performances that I did get to witness first hand were all exceptional - Maestro's fire breathing was beyond incredible, Warrior Girl's contortionism was both exotic and sexy, the Chaos on stage performance during the masquerade ball blew everyone away, and the late-night flesh pull - all were as entertaining as they were erotic or exotic.
All in all, there were almost two dozen performances, and seven workshops. The topics presented covered an expansive range of interests from gentle eroticism to hard core fetish. There were performances encompassing fire breathing, suspension, bellydancing, bondage, S&M, and latex, as well as workshops on BDSM, Gorean Slavery, erotic photography, playing with snakes, and Shibari (The art of Japanese rope bondage), to name but a few. EXOTICA's five DJs kept everyone moving all weekend long. DJ Darks Choir, DJ Audio Flesh, DJ London Shadows, DJ Alexi, and DJ Glamazon each brought their own unique mix of energy to the event. The music could not have been better! Seen amongst the guests were Lady Lethe and We Are Latex, bringing their rubbery perviness to the event. I saw many guests enjoying their latex, with the Saturday night Masquerade Ball being the biggest showing of latex of the weekend. Hostess Vena spent some time in a gorgeous black latex catsuit and red latex corset, with Mistress Xena in a full-length blue latex dress, while London Shadows donned her brand new black latex "Morticia" gown. I even got in to the act myself, wearing a latex tank top. As a latex newbie, it was an exquisite experience for me, to say the least... certainly a new addiction of which I look forward to my next fix. EXOTICA was also the weekend home for many of the fetish scene's most beautiful models. The super sultry Vivian Irene Pierce spent most of the weekend tied up in a variety of suggestive positions for photographers. EXOTICA's cover model, Lovely Laura, and the multi-talented London Shadows both brought their own exotic beauty to the weekend. Friday night's festivities included a two-hour fashion-forward fashion show with three designers/sponsors; Dykes in the City, NooMoon Tribe, and Noir Leather. Each brought their own unique blend of erotic style to the event, and the dozens of runway models participating in the fashion show all did a fabulous job. When all was said and done, EXOTICA was not only a tremendous success, but honestly the most fun I have had in a long time. As the hostess's personal slave, I was fortunate to have the chance to experience EXOTICA from a truly unique perspective. I'm writing this only a few days after the event, and yet like so many others I have already heard from, I find myself already counting the days until EXOTICA II, which is rumored to return this Fall!
